It's the sort of game that manages to make me feel nostalgic for it even though it only came out five years ago. The controls are perfect, the worlds are memorable and fun to explore, the visuals and soundtrack are excellent, and it really nails the elements of collectathon platformers that I've always enjoyed but in a more modern package. Which is saying something because I love every 3D Mario game and a decent number of the 2D ones. I wasn't 100% sure when I first played it, but looking back (and revisiting it a few times since, along with other Mario games), it's pretty easily my favourite Mario game. Late 90s-00s, they've been a top combatant against roms and modding with multiple high profile lawsuits, just as much as the RIAA in establishing and using the DMCA.Īnd look at them now, they've been one of the top companies asserting copyright over streaming, because they consider it a violation of their 'intellectual property' to point a camera at a screen while playing a game. In a world of people buying their games over an online store, they finally get to control every aspect of the market. Fortunately, the internet would come along and do the job for them. They never quite succeeded and settled for copyright infringement of instruction manuals. Nintendo led the charge in trying to crush games rental, they despised the 80s and 90s rental industry and tried to illegalize it. Just as there are good and bad points to them controlling distribution and repair channels. There are good and bad points here, from their perspective they were keeping a standard so the NES didn't build a reputation of buggy junkware in a critical time for gaming. Not so weird, they have always been a leader in trying to control the end user.įor those old enough to remember, the NES enforced Nintendo certification over games and used the infamous 10NES to lock out unlicensed, third party development.

If anyone is a die-hard PC gamer tired of empty open-world titles, play these games. These little planets that you seamlessly travel through, the simple, but still, some of the best gameplay I witnessed in a game and this soundtrack. After Gusty Garden Galaxy, I can easily put this game right behind Odyssey.
Not only does Mario have like 50 different movement mechanics, you also have 54 different captures. The game transfers from one gameplay mechanic to another with the blink of an eye. one of the best soundtracks ever with "Jump Up, Super Star!", "Honeylune Ridge: Escape" and "Fossil Falls" being probably the best tracks in any video game (imo), the most creative game I ever played (HOLY SHIT THERE ARE 2D SECTIONS), one of the best sequences that I ever witnessed in a game, the best gameplay (you should know that my number 1 priority with any video game is the gameplay), This is the happiest, most joyous, overall best game that I ever played.
I can't find a word in the dictionary to describe both Galaxy and Odyssey, but I find Odyssey to be even more perfect. For now, I want to talk about Odyssey and a bit about Galaxy. I am 100% sure that the other 3D Mario games will also be in my top games list, but I'll finish them first. I'm playing 64, Sunshine and finishing off Galaxy at the moment, already finished Odyssey and now I want to play as many Mario games as possible. I know that it's really late to start being a Mario fan, but I was always a PC-only gamer. I never really grew up with the Mario games, I always knew about their existence, but haven't played them. It's the time where I'm catching up with older, really popular games that I missed out on, because lately, I feel like there aren't many incredibly memorable games being released.
